Without a Common Enemy, We Find It Hard to Achieve Unity
Our Civil War nearly tore our country in two. But in the end, the Union prevailed—paid for in lives, property, and treasure. World War I and World War II had a unifying effect on our country. More recently, President Ronald Reagan’s leadership through the end of the Cold War against the Soviet Union provided us with a common enemy against which our nation came together. Since the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, we have no clear enemy against which we can unite.
We are now a people relatively disunited.
As noted above, we have seen multiple waves of immigrants throughout our nation’s history. Many arrived in our land to find themselves the objects of prejudice and discrimination, even physical attacks. According to History.com, during World War II, more than 110,000 Japanese-Americans were incarcerated in internment camps.6
But by the mid- to late-twentieth century, Americans believed overwhelmingly that their country was great and that our greatness could be traced to the fact that we are a nation of immigrants.
Much has changed to move us away from the tribal background of our past: Instead of riding horseback, we can travel across continents before breakfast by jumping on a plane; instead of using smoke signals, we can communicate thoughts and pictures to millions at the touch of a button on our iPhones.
